Nigeria will be Africa's sole representative in the men's basketball event of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
D'Tigers of Nigeria have qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games after an 86-73 win over China in the 2019 FIBA World Cup on Sunday, September 8.
Nigeria beat host 2019 FIBA World Cup host China in their final classification game in Guangzhou to take Africa’s sole ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
After two consecutive losses in Group B of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, the D’Tigers of Nigeria thrashed South Korea 108-66 in their last group game to qualify for the classification game.
D’Tigers in their first classification beat Cote D’Ivoire 83-66 before the win against China on Sunday. It was the third win for Alex Nwora’s men at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in a difficult way.
Nigeria with an unchanged trailed after the first quarter but fought and won the remaining three quarters - 16 – 10 (2nd Q), 25 -20 (3rd Q) and 26 -22 (4th Q).
Josh Okogie was the best performer for D’Tigers with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks from the Minnesota Timberwolves guard.
With the win, the D’Tigers finished top of Group M of the Classification with eight points.
