Starz's series Blindspotting has added an Oscar and Emmy winner to its cast.
Helen Hunt will star with Jasmine Cephas Jones in the Lionsgate TV series, based on the 2018 movie of the same title. The film's stars and co-writers, Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, are executive producing.
"It is such an honor to have Helen Hunt in this series," said Casal. "We became friends after she tweeted about her love of the film and we have long looked for a project to do together. She has been our first choice for the character Rainey since we dreamed this show up."
Blindspotting will continue the story of the film, centering on Ashley (Hamilton and The Photograph alum Jones), who's on the verge of middle class life in Oakland when her partner, Miles (Casal), is suddenly incarcerated. She's forced to move in with Miles' mother, Rainey (Hunt), triggering an existential crisis. The opinionated Rainey holds family above all else.
Blindspotting began production this week in Oakland and Los Angeles. The cast also features recording artist Benjamin Earl Turner (who's also a writer on the show), Atticus Woodward (Shameless), Jaylen Barron (Free Rein) and Candace Nicholas-Lippman (Good Trouble).
Hunt is coming off the limited series revival of Mad About You for Spectrum Originals and World War II drama World on Fire, which aired as part of PBS' Masterpiece in the United States. Her recent feature film credits include The Night Clerk, I See You and Ride, which she also directed and co-wote.
Casal will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Diggs; the film's producers Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment; Emily Gerson Saines; Ken Lee; and Barnyard Projects' Tim Palen.
